Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune started a school with $1.50, faith in God, 5 little girls and 1 boy. She sold sweet potato pies to raise money for supplies and made ink from elderberries. She campaigned for donations and bought the only land available to her in the early 1900s, Hell's Hole, the city garbage dump to begin what is now the Great Bethune Cookman University. Located in Daytona Beach, Fl it is one of the most successful small liberal arts universities in the country and continues the vision of its founder by producing graduates prepared to work in excellence and to serve their communities.
